trickle-dribble-drizzle

for reed quintet (ob+cl+altsax+barisax+bcl)
duration: 6′

Program notes

In this piece I sought to write my own version of what minimalism is and where it can take me on my creative journey. When I was thinking about what trickle-dribble-drizzle would be about, I became fixated on the patterns of water. Sometimes, very innocent and predictable, but other times, wild and erratic.

Some of the figures in this piece draw their inspiration from different gestures or scenes surrounding water. In the first section this is most evident in the ascending figure that emerges from the bass clarinet, much like bubbles emerging onto a surface. The middle section has a flowing sixteenth note motor that is being passed around the ensemble with a melody riding on top of it, like a boat making its way through the river. In the end these two sections collide and fight for protagonism, ending in a chaotic mess.

A version for bassoon instead of baritone saxophone is also available.
